July 1, 2021, forever changed college athletics. For the first time, scholarship athletes could make money from their name, image, and likeness (NIL).

But here’s the thing — new opportunities mean new challenges. Athletes, schools, businesses — everyone's trying to figure out how to make NIL work. One thing that will never change amidst any confusion, however, is the value of communicating clearly, concisely, credibly and confidently.

Being able to communicate effectively is a huge advantage in the NIL world.

What you say and how you say it shows people who you are and what you stand for. You put in the hard work as an athlete, and you can use that same drive to tap into NIL opportunities with your communications skills.

You have to practice being a good communicator -- on and offline. Learn how to break through a noisy world and be heard whether it’s with self-designed swag, a message you share or a cause you stand for.

If you’re an athlete who’s confused about the NIL world, don’t let it hold you back.

Athletes -- your parents, schools and businesses are scrambling to get their messages straight. State-led legislation crushed a significant part of the NCAA rulebook and 31 states now let high school athletes cash in on their NIL. Talk about messed-up messages!
